Why Stay At A Campsite On The Pembrokeshire Coast Path?
When you’re out hiking a long-distance trail, there are times when you want a welcoming campsite for a hot shower, to wash those sweaty clothes, to hopefully charge your phone, and enjoy a good night’s sleep on a peaceful, level spot. I definitely felt this way during my hike on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in July 2025! It can also be tricky to find a wild camping spot along this trail, making the need for a good campsite even more essential. My Campsite Reviews
During my hike, I stayed at six campsites on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path where walkers and backpackers are welcome. However, not all campsites are equal! These reviews are based on my personal experiences, and I’d love to hear from you! If you’ve had a different experience or know of other great campsites, please share your suggestions in the comments—I’m all for sharing helpful information with other hikers!
I’ve listed the campsites in the order I hiked, starting from Amroth and continuing on to St Dogmaels, as you can see on the map above. I hope you find these campsite reveiws helpful for your adventures!
Angle

Pros
- Independent on-site shop The Little Shop on Wheels (find on Facebook) – you don’t need to stay at the campsite to use the shop, and it’s accessible directly from the coast path
- Any port in a storm!
- Easy access direct from the coast path or via a quiet road into the village of Angle
- Clean
- Late arrivals
- No need to book, but I called ahead
- Someone on site
Cons
- Very basic facilities
- Untidy and rundown site
The toilet/shower block
Any Port In A Storm
To describe Angle Farm campsite as ‘basic’ is an understatement: the only thing it had going for it was a grassy pitch on a slight slope, drinking water, and some shelter from 47 mph winds and torrential rain.
The facilities had the air of an old public toilet (but, to be fair, they were certainly clean!). There are 2 basins, both with the hot water turned off, and one supposedly “hot shower” in a concrete cubicle. (Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try it as it was busy both in the evening and the following morning). Outside, there was one stainless steel washing-up sink and one Belfast sink (presumably for washing clothes) – again, neither had hot water.
The facilites had the air of an old public toilet (but, to be fair, they were certainly clean!).
The field itself wasn’t much better. There were dilapidated buildings, abandoned horse boxes and motorhomes, cables lying across the ground…the whole place had a feeling of neglect and dilapidation. If it hadn’t been for the storm, I would have turned round and wild camped on the coast (it would be straightforward to find somewhere along this stretch). Having said that, it did provide a safe space away from the worst of the weather on the coast path. And sometimes, a place of safety is all you need.
The Saving Grace
Yes, there is one, and it’s called The Little Shop on Wheels! (You can find it on Facebook, or just follow the signs from the coast path). The lady who runs it is lovely, and, unlike the campsite, you can pay using a debit or credit card, as well as cash. She sold all sorts, from pot noodles and Compeed, to buckets and spades! It’s worth a visit if you need basic supplies, and definitely worth supporting.
Pembroke

This Is A Relaxing Campsite Near The Pembrokeshire Coast Path!
Windmill Hill Caravan Park was a breath of fresh air after Castle Farm Camping. It’s a little way off the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; however, it’s the perfect stopover on the long section of urban walking on the trail.
A look at the map shows the main entrance to the site is on a busy road (B4319). I called ahead and asked if I could come up a smaller road and enter the campsite via a public footpath and a farm track (which isn’t a public footpath) at the back of their farm. The answer was yes! I recommend you ask the same: the following morning, I walked into Pembroke along the main road to see what it was like, and I can confirm, the lorries made it feel like dicing with death!
As for the campsite, it was lovely! It’s perfectly level, spacious, peaceful and friendly (including the owners!). Summer flowers brightened the site, and birdsong floated from the hedgerows around the camping field. The facilities were also spacious and spotlessly clean – and the showers were great! I highly recommend it.

- No need to book, but I called ahead. The site isn’t always attended, so call ahead if you plan to arrive late, as you’ll need a way to obtain keys to the shower block
Cons
- The toilets and showers are only accessible with a key (which didn’t work, and there was no one on site to help)
- When the reception caravan is closed there’s a convoluted way of finding keys and leaving payment
- The site can be unattended
On the face of it, Sandy Haven Campsite looked promising: it’s in a great spot at the end of a long day of urban walking. I called ahead, saying that I’d probably arrive around 7:00 pm. No one would be on site, so I was given some convoluted instructions on where to find keys to the toilet and shower block, as well as how to pay (cash only) and return the key in the morning.
The keys would be “in an envelope in a green box outside the reception caravan, which is the 9th caravan along”. They took me a while to find because the reception caravan isn’t the 9th caravan along if you arrive by foot from the coast path! Plus, I was tired!
Once I’d finally set up, I headed to the showers.
That was another £10 gone (who carries £8.50?!) for nothing more than a flattish bit of grass and some tap water!
Then, I discovered my key wouldn’t open any of the doors. I tried repeatedly. I hoped another camper might come along and let me in, to no avail. I stomped back to my tent, filthy and in need of a pee. Leaving early, I had no luck in the morning, either.
That was another £10 gone (who carries £8.50?!) for nothing more than a flattish bit of grass and some tap water!

- Very rude owner (woman)
- Expensive if you want a shower and/or to charge your electronics
- Long walk from the coast path (1.5 miles from Marloes Sands)
- Busy site, which meant it was noisy (it’s ideally situated for a visit to Skomer Island)
It’s Not All About The Facilities
Had my luck run out after a great stay at Windmill Hill Caravan Park? It was beginning to feel like it.
Tripadviser reviews might lead you to believe this is one of the best campsites on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, but that wasn’t my experience. It wasn’t the campsite itself, which, though basic, was pleasant, clean and well-laid out. Rather, it was the exceptionally rude woman that owns it. She was pleasant and welcoming-sounding on the phone, when we discussed what might be a late arrival (I missed reception closing time by 10 minutes), but the following morning, when I went to pay, was a different story.
Feel Her Wrath
I was speaking to her husband at the reception and it transpired I’d pitched in the ‘wrong place’ (in the ample space between two other small tents). Then, a disembodied voice, coming from somewhere in the back of the house, yelled “I TOLD YOU TO PITCH IN THE GARDEN” (which wasn’t an actual garden), like she was scolding a 3 year old child.
I was visibly taken aback. She’d given a vague description of ‘the garden’ on the phone, but, obviously, I hadn’t found it. There I was, paying £12 for the pitch, £3 to charge my electronics for 2 hours, and £2 for a shower, making it the most expensive campsite I stayed on, only to be berated for it.
Top Tips For A Pleasant Stay At West Hook Farm Campsite
- Avoid the woman owner!
- Arrive before 8 pm, so you can be shown where to pitch
- Ensure you have £1 coins for the shower and charging your electronics
- Remember, your electronics can only be charged between 8 am and 8 pm
I wasn’t the only recipient of her wrath. Another camper had ‘taken’ a paving slab from a pile for her bbq, which had a sign on it ‘free to use’ (I saw it, too) and the owner had shouted at her for taking it. The camper rebutted “it has a sign that they’re free to use”, “yes, but it would be nice to be asked” was her ridiculous response. Maybe scar the grass next time, perhaps she’d prefer that.

- This is a large site with bunkhouses. Potentially, this means it could be noisy. A scout group was singing its heart out when I arrived, but they were off to bed well before I was, and all was quiet! (Actually, it filled me with nostalgia!)
Celtic Camping: Possibly The Best Campsite For Walkers On The Pembrokeshire Coast Path!
The views were great even on a dreary, wet morning! The campsite faces west-ish, so you might see a good sunset over the sea, too. (l did, but I was too busy setting up to photograph it!)
The rough hewn sign for this campsite on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path might lead you to believe it would be very basic indeed, but it’s fantastic for walkers – it could even be designed with us in mind! And it’s just a short walk along a footpath from the coast path.
I was given a choice of pitches: “you can set up anywhere you like in either that field, or the one over there”. Then, I was given a good description of what was on site and where to find it “just have an explore”! (all the facilites are close together). There’s someone on-site out-of-hours, and an obvious telephone number to call if you can’t find them.
The showers were great. They were push operated, but the water was free-flowing and piping hot (I don’t mean scalding!), unlike a lot of showers of this sort. But, undoubtedly, the star of the show was the dining hall and all the facilites available within the price.

As well as what you can see in the photo, there were several rows of dining tables and a relaxing corner with comfy sofas and board games. There was another urn behind me too, and sockets along the counter, some with USB ports. Finally, I didn’t have to wait to use any of them!
Highly recommended!

The Perfect Campsite Before Your Journey Home
A peaceful night’s rest at Cardigan Camping and Caravan Site
If you’re heading into Cardigan before you catch a bus to the nearest train station home, this lovely campsite is an easy, if steep, walk up from St Dogmael’s on a quiet road.
The facilites were just what you need for an overnight stop: clean, hot showers with changing facilites in the cubicles, toilets (with hot water in the sinks!), a small kitchen with a washing up sink, laundry facilites (coin-operated), a free-to-use fridge-freezer and kettle (there may have been a microwave too). Plus, there were a couple of handy sockets for charging up your phone. .
Chickens only, you won’t be woken at the crack of dawn by an over-enthusiastic cockeral!
The owner was really kind, chatty and accommodating. Perhaps best of all, were a pen of pygmy goats and bantam chickens! (Chickens only, you won’t be woken at the crack of dawn by an over-enthusiastic cockeral!)
Highly recommended for a final stop-over.
Final Tips For Walkers Camping Along The Trail
- Campsites have seasonal opening times – check the websites for details
- Generally, backpackers and walkers don’t need to book – most campsites have room for small tents without cars
- Call ahead. It’s true, you don’t need to book, but if you let them know you’re coming they can give you any information you need – like what to do if you plan to arrive late and/or leave early. You can also find out what form of payment they accept and make sure you have cash if you need it (especially if you want to use laundry facilities)
- Many websites state multi-night stays only, and appear to charge an extortionate amount for a pitch, however, in my experience, this information isn’t intended for walkers! Give the site a call to see if they can accommodate you for just a night – I haven’t found one that’s said no yet, and the price is generally around £10 – £12.
